News- Classes

(posted on 25 Jan 2012)

If you find yourself in Tsawwassen from February 2nd to the 14th, please drop into the Tsawwassen Longhouse Gallery (home of the South Delta Artist Guild) and visit myself and 2 other artists, Eileen Fong and Laurel Johnson. We are holding an Open House on February the 4th with a collection of artwork in various media and genres. Gallery hours are 11am to 4pm- Thursday through Sunday.

Spring Promise - Winner of the Comfort Zone Award in Oil & Water 2011

Each artist will be displaying 20 to 25 pieces and we would love you to join us in our collaborative effort. Light refreshments will be served on February 4th from 11am to 4pm.

Come and enjoy the small class sizes and the relaxed atmosphere of our classes. There is basic technique such as graded washes, flat wash, variegated wash, texture making, value study and colour mixing but there is also a lot of student input. We work together to form well thought out composition and improve from week to week. These classes take place on Wednesday evening from 7pm to 9:30 starting January 25th 2012 and registering can be done in person, over the phone, or online at any Delta Parks and Recreation facility.

Supply list would be 3 basic brushes, 5 basic colours and 2 pieces of 140lb. paper.-

  • brushes - 1 1"flat brush, 1 #6 or #7 round, and one rigger or liner brush #2 or #3
  • paper - could be Arches, Winsor Newton (my personal favourite), Bockingford, Saunders, Fabriano Artistico or any other Artist Quality 140 lb (minimum) paper in a cold pressed finish - these papers come 22" X 30" and can be cut into quarters - you can also paint both sides
  • paint- Use artist quality paint- if you can't quite swing it then buy Winsor Newton 'Cotman' brand - these are about the best student quality you can buy but they still don't measure up to Artist Quality - Colours - New Gamboge (yellow), Permanent Rose (cool red), Ultramarine Blue ( warm blue), Thalo Blue ( if using winsor newton this is called winsor blue and it is a cool blue), burnt sienna (winsor newton is my favourite in this colour)
  • Extras for your painting kit - clean rags, pencil and soft eraser, sketch paper, masking tape, spray bottle, masking fluid
  • If you're feeling like you want to spend more money you could buy some additional colours like Cobalt Blue, Lemon Yellow, Red Rose Deep, Cerulean Blue - these are not necessary but I like them and inlcude them in my palette. Then the Daniel Smith Line of paint has a Quinacridone Series that produces some very yummy colours like Quinacridone Gold and Quinacridone Burnt Orange that are really beautiful colours.
  • Opus Art Supplies in Langely and Granville Island is my main place to pick up art supplies but there are other suppliers as well so look around for the best deals.

We start off slowly understanding the medium in stages of learning. We will start with black and white, gradually moving to colour. The subject matter will be varied and progressively challenging. We will study drawing techniques right along with introduction of the pastel medium. This is soft pastel - not oil pastel, so be prepared to get dirty and bring something to protect clothing. All supplies included in this great course

Reflections in Transparency- This class is an easygoing varied class with lots of different subjects as well as watercolour techniques to tackle.

We cover all of the watercolour basics plus a few personal techniques that I have found to help with this challenging medium over an 8 week session.

Starting date is January 17th 2012 - Tuesday evenings from 7 - 9:30pm. Students can register online or phone the desk at the Surrey Art Gallery at 604-501-5100 class number is 4273539

If you love to draw and love the tonal richness of soft (chalk) pastel but have never actually done anything about it then this class is for you. The class will start off with studies in Charcoal, then black white and gray, then a 2 colour study and then full colour composition. We will talk about light, value, composition, technique and use many different surfaces. This 4 session course should get you started -

Supplies for this course would be - 2 sheets of white or off white charcoal paper (such as Ingres)

-1 sheet of Canson Mi Tientes middle gray paper

- 1 sheet of mid-tone Canson Mi Tientes in Aqua , Green or Terra Cotta

- 1 sheet of Canson Mi Tientes in Dark Brown or Purple ( if you're feeling flush with Christmas money you could buy a sheet of Colorfix sanded surface paper in dark aubergine or elephant)

- some sticks of vine charcoal, some square sticks of charcoal, a white charcoal pencil ( general is the brand name I believe)

- rags

- masking tape

- a beginner set of soft pastels such as Rembrandt or other Artist Quality pastels - do not buy student grade they will only ruin your work.

- a drawing board and if you have it - a table easle

-pencil, eraser, and sketch paper for thumbnail sketches

I love this class because we're always trying something a little different. Sometimes we paint, sometimes the emphasis will move to drawing, printmaking, or 3 dimensional work. The ages range from 6 yrs to 9 yrs and the class size stays small. The kids have input into the subject matter and watch demonstrations of how to approach the project, with hands on instruction.

The supplies are all inlcuded in the price so the children need only bring their enthusiasm. Registration can be online or by phone or in person at the Delta Parks and Rec facilities. The class runs from 3:30 to 4:30 on Wednesday afternoons.

Starting in January 25th 2012 this class will take place from 4:45 to 5:45pm on Wednesdays. We will emphasize the basic shapes found in nature and how to put these shapes together. Using shading techniques and perspective to give our work depth and form. Parents have the option of enrolling their children for 4 sessions or 8 as the course continues for another session after the first session.

Phone, go online, or in person to register at any Delta Parks and Rec facility.
